Geotagging with WordPress

The Automattic team recently announced the release of the WordPress plugin named “Geolocation.” This plugin is valuable for those folks who create posts from their mobile devices, like their iPhone or Blackberry.

Here’s a screenshot of what it looks like:

But I see two issues with it. When I tested it out, it first didn’t show up at all and when I went to the post, it showed I was in South Africa. Well, that’s not right. So I asked Alex from the WP.com team, and he said it has to do with my geolocation database, which didn’t even cross my mind. I assumed that it would just work after I installed it.

The next issue I saw is that it doesn’t have the option to auto-display the map, but rather you only see it when you hover over the description. That seems a little silly to me, but maybe that’s just me.

It’s a good first attempt for v0.1, but there’s much to be desired still for it to be a production plugin.

WordPress 2.2 for the iPhone

Raanan recently announced the release of the iPhone app, WordPress 2.2. This not a major release, but a minor release. It does add some much wanted functionality though.

Version 2.0 of the WordPress iPhone application [iTunes link] is available.

Here are a few things that are new with version 2.0.

A new, more efficient user interface that makes it faster to switch between comments, posts, and pages.
Various user interface refinements and bug fixes
New comments interface, with Gravatars and the author URL shown in the comment list
Passwords are not stored in the keychain
Posts are now automatically saved and restored if network connection is lost during publishing
Added persistence, so the app re-opens in the blog you last used
Added an interface for manually entering the XMLRPC endpoint for non-standard setups
Fixed rotation-related visual glitches
Fixed errors where malformed XML prevented access to XMLRPC endpoint
Fixed edge case where local drafts were sometimes not saved
Fixed the order of photos so that they’re in the order they’re uploaded
