WordCamp NYC was a huge success, in my eyes. Jane Wells and Steve Bruner did an amazing job at organizing a two-day event. They had some amazing sponsors to help make it a huge success.

WordCampNYC 2009
A couple of the highlights for me were mostly networking related, such as meeting Ryan Duff, ShaneF, Matt Martz, Brad Williams, and Travis Billard. Of course, it’s always good to see Maya Desai and Mark Jaquith as well.
Content-wise, I think there were two major successes. The first was Brad Williams’ security session. He pointed out some great tips and plugins about WordPress Security.
The other major point which I think was really good for the overall WordPress community came in Matt Mullenweg’s keynote. He touched on the progress of shifting to a PHP5 requirement. This has been a long discussion among the WordPress developers of when to flip the switch of moving the code to requiring PHP5. Right now, roughly 10.6% of WordPress installs still use PHP4, which is frankly really sad. PHP4 is outdated and should not be used anymore, so really, a lot fewer installs should be using PHP4. But alas, we can’t ignore the numbers and must face reality.
All that to say, I’m really hoping the move to PHP5 will come sooner than later, as it will help make the core more efficient since it won’t have to keep all the legacy support for PHP4.
Did you attend WordCamp NYC? What was your experience? If you have any stories you’d like to share, make sure to comment about the event.
